Toilet Humour

Thursday, January 22, 2009
I try very hard to be mature about most things, but sometimes, the right amount of toilet humour at the wrong time sends me into a fit of giggles.

This morning was no different. The pastor called me in to talk about an upcoming course we're offering. He noted that the expenses were too high last year, and we needed to cut back. It would be easiest to cut from one of the dinner menus where too much food had been ordered in the past.

As I scanned the list, I said without thinking, "So, maybe you want to cut the cheese."

As soon as I said it, I regretted it. However, the pastor, a non-native English speaker, didn't notice anything wrong with the sentence and agreed heartily, "Yes! Yes! Let's cut the cheese!"

That was it for me. I couldn't make eye contact for the next five minutes as I tried, mostly successfully with only a stray snicker here and there, to bite my cheek and not completely bust a gut laughing.

After all, I didn't want to be the one to explain to the pastor in an otherwise serious meeting why I found the expression so darned funny.
POST-SCRIPT: As I was leaving, I mentioned a Health & Safety violation to the pastor; the carbon monoxide detector wasn't working. He assured me that since he has another one upstairs, "We won't end up being gassed!" I had to leave right away so I could have a good belly laugh.

My teen boys are always trying to trick my (English-as-a-third-language) husband into saying that. He usually eats cheese after a meal (before dessert, Euro-style) and often asks one of the boys for some cheese and a knife. All they have to do is innocently ask "What do you need the knife for?" and then they all bust a gut when he answers.

I just roll my eyes....life with boy-men!

It's unfortunate silly little things send us into a frenzy sometimes... I had to leave a cheese cutting seminar in Holland once because he announced, "And zis is how the Dutch cut the CHEESE!" I completely lost it.
