From the Past

I went out for dinner with a friend tonight to a little Italian eatery we both enjoy. No sooner had I walked into the restaurant than I was on the receiving end of the host saying excitedly, "Miss! Do you remember me?"

It took me a second but I quickly flashed back and pictured him in his school colours, and realized he was one of the kids I taught high school music to when I was a student teacher back in October 2007. I was completely stunned that he remembered a student teacher from that long ago, especially one who was only around for three weeks (I spent a week away from him and his colleagues at a band camp). He is now in a rock band and taking guitar lessons during the day and working at this restaurant at night. All through the meal and on the way out, he kept addressing me as "Miss" much to my friend's amusement. I took it as a compliment, however, that he was so willing to say hello and recognized me immediately.

This came at the end of a day that was already a little bizarre. I made a class visit to our grade 2 students who are celebrating their First Reconciliation soon, and did "practice" confessions with them. Despite my best efforts to keep talking so they wouldn't, two of them did actually make their confessions to me. I told them to say the exact same things again next time so they would actually be absolved properly.
