Thirty Something?

Sunday, March 15, 2009
This weekend I learned the importance of staying current and using recent references especially with a younger crowd. During his presentation to the engaged couples, my boss said that there was a TV show he had seen, but he said the title like he wasn't quite sure of the name of it, "Thirty Something?"

At least three of the couples in the room offered, "30 Rock?" He just kept saying, "Thirty Something?" until more people chimed in, "30 Rock!" Finally with half the class picturing Liz Lemon and crew, he continued, "On the show thirtysomething there were a bunch of couples in their thirties..." He had been saying the name of the show somewhat quizzically attempting to get people to recognize the name, not to have them help him to come up with the name.

I laughed. thirtysomething. Debuted in 1987. He's talking to a room of mostly 20-somethings and obviously they hadn't heard of the show. A very good reminder for me about why it's important to stay current with my youth group and to brush up on my Twilight and such things.

Reminds me of our beloved foundations professor who talked about those "recent" songs, "From a Distance" and "What if God Was One of Us?" !!!!
