The Garden Gnome

Sunday, May 10, 2009
In my extensive package of material I received from the hospital about a laproscopic cholecystectomy, they included a caution about not signing any important papers, making any major decisions or purchases shortly after having a general anaesthetic.

After I got home, I wondered how long that advice was meant to last after I went out and very unexpectedly bought a flat-screen TV yesterday morning.

I decided to accompany my parents to Home Depot to get my mother a Mother's Day gift from my father. My mother and I were thinking along the lines of a garden ornament, perhaps a gnome. Somehow the conversation turned to the Best Buy next door and before we knew it, we had bypassed Home Depot completely and were buying two flat-screen TVs -- one for them and I was buying one for me too.

I have taken to calling my parents' new TV "the garden gnome".

"I really like your garden gnome," I say to my mom.

"So do I," says my mom.
