Jesus is Coming - Look Busy!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009
That's a bit how it feels in the summer months in my job. A colleague calls this her period of semi-retirement. I can see why.

The programs are finished. The sacraments complete. The paperwork done and filed. The notices sent out. The surface of the desk finally visible after all these months.

Now it's all about looking busy, and yet accomplishing actual tasks slowly enough to keep yourself conscious.

Last summer I was new and had lots to do. This year, I have things to plan for the coming year, but there is less urgency and more experience to fall back on. I'm not building everything from scratch anymore.

Yesterday I spent most of the day readdressing envelopes to my Confirmati; sadly, it seems, we have raised a generation of yong people who has no concept of how to address a piece of snail mail. Even the bright kids. It's a bit depressing, actually.

Today, I will spend most of the day filling up our shiny, new First Communion register. Should it take all day? No, but I can probably drag it out to two if I write carefully enough. (I did spend part of yesterday talking the pastor down after he got the bill for said new register, reminding him it is now mandatory. That took some time and patience.)

Summer survival skills. Another thing they don't teach you in theology school.
