During an awkward little birthday party this afternoon we shared some good laughs. One of my favourites was the boss confessing that this past weekend at a baptism he performed, he had never heard the child's name before, an old English-Irish name, and assumed it was a female name.
Apparently "Matthew" as the middle name couldn't sway Father's opinion that the child's first name sounded female to him. Instead, he thought to himself, "That's an odd middle name for a girl - maybe something is wrong with the parents." He said the little boy was wearing a white baptismal gown, and had a little round face. "He looked like a girl to me!" he exclaimed.
I guess he went through half the ceremony saying "she" and "her". When he finally said "your daughter," the child's father stopped the ceremony and said, "Father, this is a boy."
He laughed out of embarrassment and for the rest of the ceremony the little guy was baptized as a male.
