Peaceful Advent IV

Sunday, December 20, 2009
With no parent course to teach, no children's choir to conduct, no gift bearers to choose, and no youth group to lead, my Fourth Sunday of Advent was very peaceful.

We wouldn't be our particular church without a few little glitches along the way, which included a broken furnace and a very interesting conversation I had with a priest. He is going to take over my parent course for one week while I am otherwise engaged, so he arrived at my office door to learn more about his assignment. I filled him in on the audience involved and told him which Vatican documents I had assigned to him.

What happened next surprised me: he argued with me about how there were no Vatican II documents written about priests, and I disagreed with him, citing Presbyterorum Ordinis. He told me he had taught courses on Vatican II for years and that was a post-conciliar document. Finally I had to prove to him it was a conciliar document by pulling up a list of the sixteen documents on EWTN. Seeing the list online, he sheepishly admitted that he would have to do his homework in giving the talk instead of just winging it, and if there was a question raised he couldn't answer, he would direct the students in the class to ask me the following week. Ha!
