I attended a school Mass with our parish school this week in celebration of Thanksgiving. One of the songs the children performed was the perennial 70s classic, "If I Were A Butterfly". I must say, I remembered almost every word and action.
I read somewhere that Alzheimer's patients quite often remember the words of the songs they grew up with when their memory has deteriorated rapidly. A liturgist once commented that it will be quite a sad state of affairs if there are a bunch of us in 2050-something, all confined to nursing homes, singing "If I were a fuzzy wuzzy bear, I'd thank you Lord for my fuzzy wuzzy hair..." over and over again...
I'm trying to put together a children's choir for our family mass, and thumbed through our hymnal for inspiration. Too many songs are too complicated for our youngest members, but I really don't want to lower ourselves to the fuzzy wuzzies of the liturgical world when selecting hymns.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a choir of children aged 6-13?
