I spent a large chunk of time with the associate pastor and pastor this week. The former relayed to me a variety of anecdotes including tales of exorcisms to which he was a witness. The pastor piped in about his first month as a priest when he was called on to do an exorcism himself. He didn’t know he was supposed to call in the official exorcist, he didn’t realize there were specific prayers to say and all alone, he just grabbed his prayer book, started praying loudly as the demonized soul rolled around screaming. He said it was absolutely terrifying, but he thinks his ad-libbed exorcism did the trick.
From these two talking away, I learned that only a few people are supposed to know who the official exorcist in the diocese is, and if they do know, they are not to talk about it. This is done to protect that exorcising priest's soul from attack.
The Church does keep a lot of secrets, but seemingly for good reason in this case!
