We have our Rite of Enrolment for all young Confirmandi at the parish this weekend. Seeing as I am totally responsible for this program, I found two possible Rites and edited the one I liked best to use with our kids. I also opted for the version that put the catechist in front of the congregation to call the students forward, and placed myself in role of catechist.
I wasn't sure how that would fly with the ordained fellows, but I left one copy for my boss, who approved it and gave it to the celebrant. When I shyly asked the celebrant if he thought it was okay, he agreed. Expecting opposition, I added, "Even the catechist part?" He assured me, "Of course - you should be up there."
So, tomorrow I make my non-lectoring, non-Eucharistic Ministering debut in front of the congregation. I'm excited and a little nervous, but altogether more positive that perhaps I'm starting to be recognized as a valuable member of the pastoral team after all, not by the congregation, who have been quite welcoming, but by the pastoral team members themselves.
