Gotta Love Kids

Monday, November 3, 2008
I attended the children's Mass this past weekend and during the opening song, I looked around and saw a tiny little hand waving in my direction. I instantly recognized the young man as one of my students in a tutoring club at the parish, an adorable little 6-year-old whose friendliness and sense of humor makes him a favorite in the program. I smiled for most of the Mass afterwards after his waving.

My smiling stopped when I was walking reverently up to Communion, and I heard a little voice say loudly, "Hi, Miss!" Everyone else in the vicinity looked around too, trying to ascertain from where the awkwardly loud voice was coming. I looked down and discovered another student in our tutoring program who had arrived very early for church, just in time to catch the Communion line from the previous Mass.

She announced loudly, "Miss, I'm having trouble with fractions."

I shushed her, saying this was not a good time and we need to be praying. She asked if she could walk with me, and I agreed. She chattered very loudly the whole way to the front despite my shushing. What a little character.

I guess it's nice to be recognized and appreciated by the kids. I just wish they'd appreciate me at more appropriate times and places!
