Marriages on a Sunday

Sunday, November 23, 2008
I'm glad that I have memorized the phone number of the Chancery Office.

A question I received today asked whether it was possible to be married on a Sunday.

I know this isn't standard practice, but I couldn't find anything in Canon law disallowing it. As it was the pastor's day off, I decided I better phone my friends at the Chancery to inquire about diocesan policy.

It turns out that marriages on Sunday are not allowed (for the practical reasons I assumed -- no ordained person wants to perform a marriage on a Sunday after multiple Masses!) except in grave circumstances. I had to chuckle and agree as the employee hastened to add, "The fact that they might have booked a hall is not grave matter!" Apparently, permission must be sought from the diocese to allow a Sunday marriage; the grave matter is evaluated at the top.

So, now I know ... and you do too!

I thought booking a hall overrides anything else?
Does the church not understand that the booking of a hall is "a grave matter"?
That's what happens when you are dealing with people who don't have in-laws!

I knew about the Sunday thing - that's how come those Friday evening weddings are becoming more popular - especially with smaller wedding parties or a 2nd marriage.

True, Teresa. At a previous parish I belonged to, we had two time slots on Friday nights for weddings and five on Saturdays.
