When I started my position last year, my very first task was to put together a Confirmation retreat in a week. I arrived to discover that the boss, who is a bit of a clean freak, had thrown out all of the materials from past years not realizing they were relevant. So, my efforts were bolstered by the memories of some helpful volunteers and lots of creativity and assistance from others including some good friends.
This time a year later, I have finally done everything once in the parish. I know most people. Further, I am confident that tomorrow's Confirmation retreat will go smoothly as I have had a whole year to tweak things and make them mine. There was still some scrambling with volunteers who fell ill and the inability to find a priest to hear confessions, but a shout out on Facebook yesterday proved helpful and we're now in good shape. I have a lot of classmates and friends helping me pull this off again this year, but this time I'm in a position to return the favour and I'm confident there will be a lot less "chicken with my head cut off" type of running around and panicking.
What a difference a year makes.
