Another Identity Issue

The boss and I met with the new head of the school today. She warmly greeted the boss then turned to me and I introduced myself with my job title. She replied, "Oh, so you're the one who answers the phone."

I hope that my mouth wasn't actually hanging open; it certainly was in my head.

Once the meeting got underway things did get better. I got most of what I wanted to accomplish done successfully. I don't know if he'd ever admit it or not, but I think the boss was probably glad I was there because she asked at least two questions he wouldn't have had a clue how to address and I jumped in to answer them.

When I got back to the office I had to send her an email confirming some dates and times, and I reverted to doing something I haven't done in a long time. I signed my name with all of my credentials -- four degrees and two professional titles.

This has been a rough week identity-wise. I hate having to defend what I do and explain it repeatedly to those who will never accept it (the one today wasn't in that latter category, I believe). I am glad to have a meeting downtown tomorrow with my colleagues from around the city. The timing really couldn't be better, just when I'm feeling kicked in the teeth for what I do. I hope this will give me some much needed revitalization.
