Switching from Pessimism Mode for a Moment

Sunday, November 22, 2009
I noticed that the tone of the past few posts has been rather on the pessimistic end of things. Last week was a difficult one, so it's somewhat easy for me to slip into that mode and not realize its pervasiveness in how I think about my ministry.

So, as a deliberate effort to switch to a more optimistic tone, I will share some highlights of the day:

- In addition to the spontaneous applause, several parents told me how great the choir sounded today.

- I invited a group of teenagers I know to a confession event next week. I simply put it out there, saying I wanted to go, and they could come with me if they wanted. Every single one of them agreed to come. On a Friday night. To Confession. A-maz-ing!

- I was talking to a couple about marriage after Mass when I felt someone tugging on my sleeve. A little boy I know was there, smiling up at me and waving because he didn't want to leave without saying hi.

Those are the moments I have to try to hang onto, instead of the ones that threathen to drive me crazy.
