Today was not an easy day to be in ministry. I arrived and found out that one key person had missed the baptism course yesterday. I emailed to see what happened, and she told me she phoned yesterday to explain her mother had just died. Thanks to whichever secretary didn't bother to pass that message on.
Next I brought out some Advent materials that several parents had pre-ordered in advance so they could have them in time for Advent. Unbeknowst to me, a bunch of others jumped in and took those that belonged to others. Now, we're eight books short and I have no idea how I am going to rectify this by next Sunday.
Our coordinator was absent on a family emergency, and relayed me a message that he needed volunteers for a Christmas pageant. I asked the parent group for volunteers, and some kindly did offer to help. Unfortunately, I found out afterwards that they actually wanted child volunteers, and one of those who did volunteer chewed me out for having her volunteer then reneging on it. Honestly - you'd think she would be relieved to be off the hook.
Finally, out of my choir of ten, only three showed up to sing at Mass. I told them they had to be loud and they really stepped up to the plate. Much to my surprise, the congregation burst into applause for them after the second song. I wasn't sure if it was pity applause, "Wow, you guys are brave!" applause or genuine applause, but the kids were all sufficiently embarrassed by it so it worked, whatever it was!
I hope tomorrow goes more smoothly.
