When Nothing Goes To Plan

Wednesday, November 11, 2009
I came in today with two specific tasks to do, and neither came to fruition because anything and everything kept derailing my plans. The secretary was late so I picked up a message from a person seeking confirmation that a profession of faith had occurred. Unfortunately, I spent the next two and a half hours going through hundreds of old records -- Baptismal records, Confirmation records, old Mass books, old duplicate copies of baptism certificates, professions of faith, and personal diaries -- only to turn up what I had feared from the outset: no record exists. The secretary took a stab at finding it also but she had no luck either, so I emailed the former pastor, who hasn't yet responded, and I phoned the woman back to break the bad news to her in the afternoon.

I ended up getting caught up in everything else today too: altar server cassocks, choir books, emails with strange requests, and finally, to top it all off, the secretary's innocuous question at 4:30pm: "Do we not bother to deposit the collection when the boss is not here?" So, a last minute brisk walk to the bank with the associate -- since no cars were available -- was the final thing I managed to accomplish.

Hopefully tomorrow I will get to those two tasks I didn't manage to tackle today, but then again, in my line of work, you just never know what will happen.
