Unexpected Encounters

Tuesday, December 22, 2009
Today seemed to be a day for unexpected things. Just after lunch I answered the door because our secretary was not back yet, and it was a rather unusual fellow, known to us, who insisted on doing a hands-on blessing of my foot for healing. As he noted, it was an act of faith -- you just never know if he has a gift of healing. I sure hope so.

Shortly afterwards, I went into the church to transition our altar server outfits from our ratty albs to our new-to-us cassocks and soutanes. I happened upon one of my smallest servers, only 9 years old, coming into the church by herself. I was surprised and asked, "What are you doing here?" She replied, "I love the church." I wasn't quite sure what to say to that, so I stuttered something about that being great and to have a good visit, and then I went on with my server wardrobe switch.

In the morning our boss gave us all a Christmas bonus - a very pleasant surprise - and in the afternoon, a parent dropped off the biggest gift basket I have ever seen. One of the girls laughed and asked me how I was going to get it home; it is so incredibly generous. The pastor kindly offered to give me a lift home from the staff lunch on Thursday if I make it there on my own. That will work well as I will be doing a 5-midnight shift and his offer of a lift will give me a chance to rest up in between the first and second walks to the parish.
