They say new skills make you more employable. Today I got cornered while attending Mass indicating that there were no ushers to take up the collection. I grabbed a man I knew in the pews, and the informant grabbed another, and we were off. It was my first time "ushing". Unfortunately, I didn't realize how tricky it was to clear people and the ends of pews with that long-handled basket. That was a challenge made doubly difficult given my complete lack of depth perception. At one point I banged the basket so hard into the end of the pew I nearly spilled everything in the basket out onto the floor. It startled the poor parishioner in the pew, causing her to jump. Another parishioner nearly lost an eye when I misjudged the distance between her face and the air in front of her.
There are some skills best left unperfected. This may be one of them for me.
