I had a productive day off yesterday, getting in a lot of errands as well as visiting with a friend and her two precious daughters. Although in my work I have a lot of contact with the youngest members of our parish, I rarely get the chance to hold any of these young ones and it was a real treat for me to be able to visit, listen to their mom and hold the younger of the two while she slept. Their mom and dad should be very proud of the wonderful work they are doing in raising these two; the older one was so polite, handing me my purse and my bag as I left, and smiling away at me once she got used to this stranger in her home. She made me laugh when she decided she wanted to try on my knee-high boots; on her, they were not so much knee-high as waist high, but she had fun walking around like a little Michelin girl in them. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting them and hope to do it again in the new year, perhaps up at my apartment once I take care of some "little fingers" proofing that needs to happen to make it safe for the girls.
Soon after I left their apartment I received a phone call from a potential employer, asking if I was still interested in working for them. I had applied to work for them almost a year ago, so it definitely caught me off guard. It seems they have an opening for January and were interested in my resume. I told them I was committed to another place of work until the summer. She then informed me that three such openings would be available for the fall, and if they were not filled internally, she would be in touch. I guess it's always good to have options.
Finally, when I got home I discovered a note from a good friend that made my day. He wrote, "I did not intend to have lunch at 'our' restaurant but somehow fate intervened...As I sat down in there at our old table (where we talked about just about everything) I was struck for a minute by the wonder and awesomeness of our friendship. So, in a totally holiday way (I would write Christmas but that's no longer PC) thanks for everything! I left with a strange smile on my face and a great deal of joy to be here working and being with wonderful people." That's one of the sweetest notes I have received in a long while and just the exact words I really needed right now.
