Farmers' Market

Saturday, July 11, 2009
After months of lipservice, I finally got up and made my way to the Saturday morning farmers' market near my home. It was better than I had expected with 20 some vendors selling everything from produce to dairy to meats to fish to jam and honey to baked goods to fresh bread.

I had only a couple of things on my list but came back with a bunch of white onions, some organic strawberries, a loaf of cilantro-onion sourdough bread, and a free ticket to see a religiously significant museum exhibit I have been wanting to see.

As I was perusing the breads available, I heard someone call my name and lo and behold, it was our parish's part-time deacon. He introduced me to his niece and daughter and mentioned that he is a member at the museum in question and could get me in on a guest pass for free. Works for me -- we're planning on a Sunday afternoon excursion.

I timed the trip just right -- the sky was getting darker and the air heavier as I walked back, and no sooner had I arrived in my kitchen to start washing produce than the heavens opened and repeated claps of thunder grew more and more violent outside. Maybe that four leaf clover is doing its job already.
